Update 7: New Year's Goal: Become an "official" Gourmess by August 2010

I was 32 when I started cooking; up until then, I just ate.

I have been in a blissful food coma for the past week. (Contented sigh.)

For the long weekend, Chris whisked me away to a foodie's paradise where one meal lasted 6 hours (we left the restaurant at 2 a.m.) and had 29 mindblowing courses that left me feeling as if I had just experienced something reverent and holy. It was the pinnacle of greatness. (Also, the champagne that Chris ordered looked like a sunset in a glass.) A day later, I got the once in a lifetime chance to help out in a 4-star kitchen. A perk of sitting at the chef's table, I guess! It felt so right--the simmering sauces, the heat of the stove, the camaraderie of the brigade--and, apparently the chef de cuisine told Chris I had a "nice touch." It was thrilling. (Thanks, Grant, Charlie, and Chris for two meals I shall not soon forget.) I came home to emails and calls from the FCI, wondering if I am interested in attending an open house...and a packet was in my mailbox, too--oh my! (I had filled out an information request form ages ago.) Am I really considering this?

Well, first, I need to finish my original goal and you'll be happy to know that I've finished my second round of reading, which means the cooking part starts this weekend! Hooray! The next 5 months will be all about learning technique and hopefully making some tasty dishes and not too much of a mess of things. The vocabulary part, however, is taking some time. Most of the terms are French-based, so that helps, but some of them have more than a couple different definitions. Good thing I have some time, as I only have about 1/4 inch of the 3+ committed to memory!

P.S. Get ready-the fun begins on Sunday!
